Why this rating
The US has a Black population of about 49 million (Pew, 2024), giving visitors access to extensive Black-owned businesses, culture and community. However, the UN CERD (2022) raised concern about racial profiling and excessive police force with a disparate impact on people of African descent, and Mapping Police Violence found Black people were 2.9 times more likely than White people to be killed by police in 2024. Experiences vary widely by city and region.
