Atlanta for Black travellers

Atlanta is a major centre of Black American life, shaped by the civil rights movement, Sweet Auburn and the Atlanta University Center HBCUs. Heritage sites are close together and the city's culture and music scene are strong, though it is car-oriented and downtown quietens after hours.

Where to stay & explore

  • Sweet Auburn — Once called 'the richest Negro street in the world'; home to the MLK birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church, APEX Museum and Auburn Avenue Research Library.
  • Westside / Atlanta University Center — Hub of major HBCUs and Civil Rights-era student activism.
  • Downtown — Home to the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, Centennial Olympic Park and the Georgia Aquarium, with strong daytime foot traffic.

Stay safe in Atlanta

  • Car break-ins are the most common resident complaint downtown; leave nothing visible in the car and prefer staffed, well-lit garages.
  • On MARTA, keep phone and bag close to your body, especially on escalators and trains; panhandling is common.
  • The government and office district feels quiet and isolated after hours; use well-lit routes or rideshare at night.
  • At the MLK park, use the designated visitor parking at 423 John Wesley Dobbs Ave NE and lock your car.

Black heritage & culture

  • Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park — 450 Auburn Ave NE: King's birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church and a visitor centre; many nearby buildings are private and closed.
  • National Center for Civil and Human Rights — Interactive exhibits including a lunch counter sit-in simulation and Freedom Riders displays.
  • APEX Museum — Auburn Avenue museum on African diaspora history and Black entrepreneurship.
  • Hammonds House Museum — Gallery of artists of African descent at 503 Peeples St SW.

Getting around

MARTA train from the airport station by baggage claim reaches downtown in under 30 minutes for $2.50, with free transfers for three hours. Tap a contactless card or phone, or use a Breeze card.
