London for Black travellers

London has a long-established Black British community, with Caribbean and African culture woven into areas such as Brixton and Notting Hill. It is a welcoming, diverse city for most visitors, though documented disparities in policing are worth knowing about.

Where to stay & explore

  • Brixton — Centre of Afro-Caribbean London since the Windrush generation, with Brixton Village, Pop Brixton and Windrush Square; about 10 minutes from central London by Tube.
  • Notting Hill (W10/W11) — Home of Notting Hill Carnival, which has run since 1966 and closes much of W10 and W11 to traffic each August bank holiday weekend.
  • Southwark — Base of The Africa Centre, a cultural hub founded in 1964 with panel discussions, film screenings and creative workspace.

Stay safe in London

  • Stop and search is documented as uneven: a 2023 analysis found Black people were 46% of intimate-search stops in London against 13.5% of the population (2021 census).
  • Phone snatching by moped and bike riders happens across London; hotspots include areas outside major stations such as King's Cross, St Pancras and Euston. Avoid using phones kerbside.
  • Notting Hill Carnival draws around two million people and pedestrianises much of W10/W11, so expect dense crowds and plan exit routes in advance.

Black heritage & culture

  • Black Cultural Archives, Brixton — Free heritage centre at 1 Windrush Square on Black British history; reading room visits are by appointment, so check the website first.
  • London Museum Docklands — Permanent gallery 'London, Sugar & Slavery' examines how the transatlantic slave trade shaped the city.
  • The Africa Centre — Southwark venue founded in 1964 hosting talks, screenings and events centred on African and diaspora voices.
  • Black History Walks — Expert-led walking tours of Black British heritage, run with partners including the Imperial War Museum and the BFI.

Getting around

From Heathrow, the Elizabeth line reaches central London in under 45 minutes (£13.90), the Underground from £5.50, and Heathrow Express takes 15 minutes to Paddington (from £10). Brixton is about 10 minutes from the centre on the Victoria line.

Festivals & events

  • Notting Hill Carnival — August bank holiday weekend (main days Sunday and Monday)
