December in GH 2026: what Black travellers need to know

December in GH runs from 1 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Here are the entry rules, safety pointers and heritage sites to plan around before you book.

Editorial guide. Last checked 17 October 2026. Entry rules change, so always confirm with official sources before you travel.

What December in GH is

Every December, Accra becomes one of the biggest gathering points for the African diaspora anywhere in the world. The Ghana Tourism Authority's official December in GH season brings music festivals, beach parties, art shows and homecoming events.

The season grew out of the 2019 Year of Return and is now Ghana's peak travel period, so flights, hotels and drivers book up early.

SafeRoute rating for Ghana: 90/100, generally safe for Black travellers. See the full Ghana briefing.

Entry rules (UK passport holders)

  • Visa: required. Apply online through the Ghana High Commission. Standard processing is 10 to 15 days; an express service of around 3 days is available in person in London. In December, apply as early as you can.
  • Yellow fever: you must show a vaccination certificate to enter, and upload it with your visa application.
  • Passport: valid for at least 6 months after the date you arrive.
  • Dual nationals: Ghanaian-British dual nationals can show a Ghana dual nationality card instead of a visa.
  • African passport holders: Ghana announced free e-visas for all African nationals from 25 May 2026. You still apply online.
  • Cash: declare all foreign currency on arrival, and don't carry more than the equivalent of US$10,000.

Safety

The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the Bawku Municipal area in the Upper East region. Accra and the coast are outside that area.

In Accra, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps at night, and get travel insurance that covers your whole trip. Check the FCDO's latest Ghana advice before you go.

Heritage to plan around

  • Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, on the coast west of Accra
  • Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park
  • Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Accra
  • W.E.B. Du Bois Centre, Accra
