Why this rating
Taiwan is US Level 1, with natural disasters the main risk, and the FCDO has no area warnings. Black residents told the Taipei Times (2020) that racism mostly takes the form of microaggressions such as hair-touching and stereotypes, citing a 2018 kindergarten job advert rejecting 'black or dark skinned' teachers; the Darlie toothpaste's 'Black People Toothpaste' Chinese name was only dropped in 2022. A 2025 Black in Asia account described stares but a warmer welcome than elsewhere in East Asia.
