Why this rating
Mauritius is relatively safe: the FCDO says most crime is non-violent, and the US rates it Level 2 for crimes of opportunity. About a third of Mauritians descend from enslaved people, but the majority is of Indian descent, and in 2025 UN CERD urged the state to address 'deep-rooted discrimination faced by the Creoles'. Black travel media has promoted it, but we found little reporting on how Black visitors are treated, so confidence is low.
