Why this rating
The US rates Malaysia Level 1 and calls it generally safe, with only the islands off eastern Sabah flagged for kidnapping risk. Anti-African bias is documented: Asia Times (2018) reported condominiums in the Klang Valley issuing 'No Africans' notices and evicting African tenants, and a Nigerian visitor described being refused entry to Sabah with the words 'we do not allow your kind here' (The Sun, 2023). A Black American expat in Penang writing for Travel Noire reported stares and photos but an overall positive long-term experience.
