Why this rating
Malawi is majority-Black, and Travel Noire listed it in 2019 among destinations especially welcoming to Black travellers; we found no documented hostility towards Black visitors. The US rates it Level 2 for violent crime and unrest, and the FCDO notes occasional kidnappings for ransom and a violent 2025 assault on UK tourists at a Mulanje hotel. The September 2025 election ended with the incumbent conceding defeat.
Official advice: US Level 2 (May 2026); FCDO: no area-specific warnings
