Why this rating
The military took power in October 2025 after mass protests, and a transitional government now rules. The FCDO says foreigners are targeted by pickpockets and muggers and that armed robberies occur on main roads, while the US rates it Level 2 with some Level 3 areas. Black American Peace Corps volunteers wrote in 2017 that they were often taken for locals and that white foreigners were held in higher regard; evidence on Black visitors is thin, so confidence is low.
