Why this rating
Officially low-risk (US Level 1; FCDO advises caution only near the Tajik border), but there is specific evidence of hostility towards dark-skinned foreigners. A Nigerian teacher died after a street assault in Bishkek in 2019; police discounted a racial motive, but relatives and residents quoted by Eurasianet described routine racist abuse. In May 2024 mobs attacked hostels housing South Asian students in Bishkek.
