Indonesia is US Level 2 for terrorism, natural disasters and unrest, with Central and Highland Papua at Level 4. Black travellers writing about Bali (e.g. The Black Lens, 2024; Travel Noire) describe a welcoming experience, but dark-skinned Papuans face documented racism, including racist 'monkey' slurs by officers in Surabaya in 2019 that triggered riots. Tourist experience outside Bali is less documented.
