Why this rating
The US rates El Salvador Level 1 and the FCDO notes significant reductions in crime, but a state of exception since 2022 allows long pre-trial detention, and the FCDO warns British detainees may be denied consular access. Afro-Salvadorans were only 0.13% in the 2007 census, following a 1933 law that barred African immigrants. A Black solo traveller (2024) reported stares but a safe, welcoming trip; wider evidence is limited.
