The FCDO advises against all travel within 30km of the borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and Niger and parts of the Tunisian border, and the US rates Algeria Level 2 for terrorism and kidnapping. EuroMed Rights reports that over 31,000 people were expelled to Niger in 2024 amid raids and racist rhetoric targeting sub-Saharan Africans in media and online. Black visitors with Western passports are less exposed, but may face suspicion and profiling.
