Generally safe for Black travellers🇰🇪 Nairobi, Kenya
Nairobi for Black travellers
Nairobi is East Africa's busiest hub, with a growing arts scene, museums and a lively social life. It is reported to be safer than its old reputation, but muggings, protests and terrorism warnings mean Black travellers, like all visitors, should plan carefully.
Where to stay & explore
- Kilimani — Main hotel district with upscale restaurants and shops.
- Westlands and Gigiri — More central accommodation, including boutique hotels near shopping areas.
- Karen — Affluent suburb about 10 miles out, with luxury hotels; traffic into town can be slow.
Stay safe in Nairobi
- The US State Department warns against travel to Eastleigh and Kibera because of violent crime, including carjacking and kidnapping.
- Armed robbery, mugging and home invasion occur in Nairobi; solo travellers face particular risk, with assaults reported in bars and hotels (US State Dept).
- Demonstrations in Nairobi often turn violent; elections are due in August 2027 and past ones triggered road-blocking protests.
- Use Uber, Bolt or Little Cab rather than street taxis; secure bags in matatus, where window theft occurs.
- Phone snatching and the 'Nairobi bump' distraction theft are reported; avoid walking after dark.
Black heritage & culture
- Nairobi National Museum — A traditional visitor stop covering Kenya's cultural history.
- Bomas of Kenya — Open-air museum presenting Kenyan cultural heritage.
- Nubian Art Gallery — Gallery showcasing artists from conflict zones.
- Kenya Railway Museum — Features murals on its walls and train carriages.
Getting around
FCDO advises using Mombasa Road or the Nairobi Expressway between Jomo Kenyatta airport and the city. Ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt) is the usual option; matatus and boda bodas carry accident risks.
