Montreal for Black travellers
Montreal has a distinct Black history, from the railway porters of Little Burgundy to the jazz clubs that made it a leading continental scene. Today much of that heritage is memory rather than place, but Caribbean food and the summer jazz festival keep the culture visible.
Where to stay & explore
- Little Burgundy — Historic heart of Black Montreal, built around railway work and the 1920s jazz scene, now gentrifying.
- Old Montreal — Home to Caribbean restaurants such as Kwizinn, run by chef Mike Lafaille.
- Downtown festival district — Jazz festival grounds, with Haitian-Caribbean restaurant Kamuy nearby.
Stay safe in Montreal
- Amnesty Canada says anti-Black racism in policing, including street checks, is documented across Canada; its data covers Toronto, Halifax, Vancouver and Ottawa.
Black heritage & culture
- Little Burgundy Black history — Site of Union Congregational Church (1907) and the former Rockhead's Paradise jazz club; the Negro Community Centre was demolished in 2014.
- Oscar Peterson and Oliver Jones legacy — Jazz figures from the district whose music preserves its cultural memory.
- Montreal International Jazz Festival — Summer festival; about 65% of shows are free, with masterclass talks.
Getting around
Little Burgundy lies north of the Lachine Canal between Saint-Henri and Griffintown, close to downtown and walkable from it.
