Generally safe for Black travellers🇸🇳 Dakar, Senegal
Dakar for Black travellers
Dakar is a coastal capital with a strong cultural scene and one of West Africa's best-known slavery memorial sites on nearby Gorée Island. Senegal is generally considered safe with sensible precautions, though FCDO notes rising theft in the city and periodic protests.
Where to stay & explore
- Plateau — Downtown district and ferry port for Gorée; considered safe in daylight.
- Corniche — Seafront area described as safe to visit during the day.
- Ouakam — Location of the 52-metre African Renaissance Monument.
Stay safe in Dakar
- FCDO says robbery, burglary and assault have become more common in Dakar, sometimes involving weapons.
- Be careful after dark and avoid walking alone, and use care at ATMs (FCDO).
- Bogus taxi drivers pretending to know you overcharge at the airport; FCDO advises pre-arranging transport.
- Demonstrations can turn violent and have blocked the road between Blaise Diagne airport and Dakar.
- Phone snatching and bag slashing in crowds are common; use registered taxis or apps at night.
Black heritage & culture
- Maison des Esclaves, Gorée Island — Memorial house on Gorée; open 10:30-12:00 and 15:00-18:00, closed Mondays.
- Musée historique du Sénégal, Gorée — Housed in Fort d'Estrées, with views over the harbour; closed Mondays.
- African Renaissance Monument — Africa's tallest statue, at 52 metres, though controversial for its cost and North Korean builders.
Getting around
The Gorée ferry leaves from the Plateau port (about 30 minutes; bring your passport). FCDO advises pre-arranging airport transfers; use registered taxis or apps at night.
