Hi, I'm Nasiru.
I've always loved travelling. From relaxing beach holidays and city breaks to exploring new cultures and meeting people from around the world, travel has given me some of my best memories. But as a Black traveller, it has also exposed me to experiences that many travel guides never talk about.
None of these experiences ruined my love for travel, but they did make me realise something important: Black travellers often have a very different travel experience, yet there was no single place where we could easily share, discover, and learn from each other's stories.
That's why I created this platform.
I wanted to build a space where Black travellers could openly share both their good and bad experiences anywhere in the world. A place where someone planning a trip could learn about the realities of a destination before they arrive. A place where amazing, welcoming destinations can be celebrated, while experiences involving racism, discrimination, harassment, profiling, or exclusion can be honestly discussed.
Whether you're researching a country, city, venue, neighbourhood, attraction, or hidden gem, SafeRoute brings together editorial destination notes, selected external resources, and community tools for Black travellers. Every listing should be independently checked before you book.
"Travel should be about adventure, freedom, and creating memories — not wondering how you'll be treated because of the colour of your skin."
My hope is that this platform helps Black travellers explore the world with greater confidence, make informed decisions, and support one another through shared knowledge and experiences.
From beaches and city breaks to the moon and back, every experience matters.
Welcome to the community. ✊🏾

SafeRoute Black Travel is a community information platform that aggregates and displays user-submitted travel experiences, ratings, and media. We are:
All destination ratings, safety labels ("positive," "mixed," "negative"), and community experiences reflect individual user opinions only.
Account and community features require an account created by email or Google sign-in. You must provide accurate information and are responsible for activity under your account. Features still being prepared for launch may be unavailable.
SafeRoute is not an emergency response service. In an emergency, contact local emergency services and your embassy or consulate directly.
Nothing on this platform constitutes professional legal, medical, safety, financial, or travel advice. You should always:

SafeRoute Black Travel ("SafeRoute", "we", "us") provides editorial travel information and selected community features for Black travellers. This policy covers enabled account, profile, chat, newsletter, reporting, and enquiry features. Features marked unavailable do not collect new submissions through the public interface. We do not sell personal data to third parties.
a) Account information. If you create an account by email or by signing in with Google, we collect your name, email address, and (if provided) a profile photo. Email accounts require verification before certain features unlock. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email, and profile photo with us in accordance with your Google account settings.
b) Profile content. Anything you add to your profile — display name, profile photo you upload, bio — is stored and may be shown publicly next to your comments, stories, and Travel Twins listing.
c) Community content. Comments, community-submitted travel experiences, Radar reports, and live chat messages are stored with your account ID and display name (unless posted anonymously, where supported) and a timestamp.
d) Travel Twins / traveller matching. If you use Travel Twins, we store the trip details you enter — destination, travel dates, interests, travel style, and budget — so other users can find and connect with you. This is visible to other logged-in users until you delete the listing.
e) Emergency Alert (SOS) submissions. If you use the Emergency Alert feature, we store the situation type you select, the location you type in, your description, your account ID and display name, and a timestamp. See Section 5 below — this feature is not monitored in real time and does not contact emergency services.
f) Location information. If you grant permission, we use your device's GPS (via your browser's geolocation) to help pre-fill your location when submitting an Emergency Alert. We do not track your location in the background or at any other time.
g) Uploaded media. Profile photos you upload are stored in our cloud storage (Firebase Storage, provided by Google) and linked to your account.
h) Newsletter. If you subscribe, we store your email address for the sole purpose of sending SafeRoute updates. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in any newsletter email.
i) Partnership and business enquiries. If you submit a partnership, venue, or advertising enquiry, we store the contact and business details you provide to respond to your enquiry.
j) Device and usage data. We collect standard technical data — IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, and approximate location derived from IP — for security, performance monitoring, and analytics.
k) Cookies and local storage. We use essential cookies/local storage to keep you signed in and remember your cookie and disclaimer preferences. We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.
Account data and enabled community features are stored using Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore database, and Storage), operated by Google. Firebase stores and processes data on Google's cloud infrastructure in accordance with Google's own security and privacy practices — see Firebase's privacy and security documentation. Website hosting and content delivery is provided by Netlify. We use Google Fonts for typography, which may involve Google collecting basic usage data — see Google's Privacy Policy.
The Emergency Alert (SOS) tool lets you record details of an urgent situation to our database. It is not an emergency response service. Specifically:
Travel experiences, comments, chat messages, and Radar reports you submit may be displayed publicly on the platform, generally alongside your display name unless an anonymous option is used and selected. Do not include sensitive personal information (full address, financial details, passport numbers, etc.) in anything you submit publicly. You are responsible for the content you submit and confirm you have the right to share it.
We retain account and content data for as long as your account is active, or as needed to provide the platform's features. You can request deletion of your account and associated personal data at any time by contacting us (Section 11). On request, we will delete your account information, uploaded media, and directly-identifying data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain limited records for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes. Public community content you posted (such as an experience or comment) may be anonymised rather than fully removed if deleting it would break the surrounding conversation, unless you specifically request full removal.
This platform may reference or link to third-party content (YouTube videos, external blogs, booking partners, etc.). These third parties have their own privacy policies and we are not responsible for their data practices. When you follow a link to a third-party site, that site's privacy policy applies.
We rely on Google Firebase's security infrastructure (encryption in transit, access-controlled database rules) to protect stored data, and implement reasonable technical measures on our own platform. However, no internet transmission or storage system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security of data transmitted to or from this platform.
This platform is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from minors. If you believe a minor has created an account or submitted data, please contact us for removal.
If you are in the UK or European Economic Area, you have rights under UK GDPR / GDPR, and we extend the same practical rights to all users regardless of location, including:
To exercise these rights, email kamil@saferouteblacktravel.com. We aim to respond within 30 days.
We update this Privacy Policy whenever we add or change a feature that affects how data is collected or used. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page whenever that happens. Continued use of the platform after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
For privacy-related enquiries or to exercise your data rights, email kamil@saferouteblacktravel.com.
